A very new business blog spotlight

This review should be a lesson to anyone out there thinking of starting a business on the web. I can honestly say that before this I had no idea there was an active market for chunky rings. There are niche's all over the place waiting to be provided for. Take the rawness here as a lesson in initiative and get moving on what you're passionate about!

In my most recent searches through the internet I have come across another start up business blog I wanted to spot light. The blog and business share the same space and it is Cool Chunky Rings. Now I know this is another jeweler and I’m still not one to go online shopping for chunky rings, mostly because I already have chunky fingers. I can appreciate how new, raw, and energetic the blog-to-be is and that’s something I can identify with. I think this blog does a great job creating and identifying with its niche of chunky rings and their consumers.

Before jumping into my thoughts about the content here is a quick snapshot of the usability and navigation. On the surface it looks to be a pretty standard blog/sales website, no overly complicated homepage to navigate and an archive menu at the left for easy access. The same goes for the partners/sponsors and search tab, no questions or surprises there. The only thing I wish there was, was a bit more about the author(s). I want to point out that this blog is still very raw and needs some love. I did enjoy flipping through these posts, which were short and sweet, and would’ve liked to find out more about the person(s) behind the screen. One thing I did notice was that some of the “Buy Now” buttons were either not working properly or there was something wrong with the coding because they were all grayed out. Ok on to the content.

The very first post was just this past May 21, 2010 and gives the reader a bit of insight into their first recommendation for a chunky ring that day. It has all the perfect ingredients to be a great blog the only thing I’m missing is a connection. It was interesting to see the all the different kind of rings, I had no idea there were so many categories, but I missed any connection. The mediums could be a bit more diverse as well. The pictures were great but they all looked like they were staged for sale, we never see anyone wearing them, video or even audio (podcasts).

I think that there is room for this blog to be great companion and asset to this business. The moderators and admin here have to work on their understanding of communicating with their potential customers and possibly providing a space for other people to be excited about their chunky rings. Creating excitement around a brand is never a bad thing, especially when your readers get to participate in the spreading of that excitement. It’s no secret that the more we, as readers, understand about a person and their business, the more connections we make with those people, leading to better business connections. This counts for those that become clients and customers to people that will be cheerleaders for your brand. Overall if Cool Chunky Rings were a client of mine I would help them take a great foundation they just created and grow it into a chunky ring community.

Still some ways to go but, good start Cool Chunky Rings!!
