Your choice in web browser when making the switch to Windows 8 will be incredibly important. That's because for the first time in Internet-use history, Windows Internet Explorer is expected to drop below the 50 percent line of the web browsing market share. Part of that dip is a result of increased competition in terms of hardware: phones running on Android are bringing Chrome into the pockets of people everywhere and Apple Computer is confidently controlling a permanent block of mobile and traditional computer use. But the more detrimental factor in IE's drop in popularity seems to be its inability to appear ideal in the eyes of many modern users of Microsoft products. Forget technical support, these days the typical computer user only cares about how well the web browser works.

That makes the work cut out for Microsoft, who is determined to revamp IE in time for Windows 8. After years of continual public disgruntlement with the default Windows web browser and the recent embarrassment of having major news sources propagate the results of false survey showing IE users have low IQs, Microsoft wants to make sure the latest edition of Explorer is at last something people appreciate. But it's looking less and less likely that IE will avoid dropping below 50 percent of the market.

Does Microsoft care about this? There's little doubt that they saw this coming years ago when Mozilla Firefox broke out onto the web browsing scene and changed it forever. Added to the implementation of mass mobile web browsing on alternative hardware and therefore alternative web browsers, Microsoft must have always known that their browser's market reign had an expiration date. But that doesn't mean they aren't, and they won't, try to fight back and reclaim lost popularity.

Can they? That depends on you, potential Windows 8 user. Your embracing or rejection of the latest version of Explorer will contribute to whether or not the browser drops to an unprecedented level of popularity. Will you give it a chance, or immediately install Firefox or Chrome? Microsoft's loss of web browsing dominance will probably be the most inconsequential change in 2011 computing, compared to more important events of this year. But in terms of the history of web connectivity, the next few months may see the start of a new era.
