Surviving A Nor’Easter

Even if you were not affected by the the recent storm this past weekend - make a cup of coffee and pull up to Financially Digital’s Nor’Easter Survival Guide. Everyone from the Boy Scouts of America to your financial planner always advise about being prepared in case of an emergency. If you are like me then you take a look in the pantry, check the gas in the car, and make sure the flashlights have batteries. That’s it. Well this past storm has put people out for more then just a few hours, in some cases it will be a week before power returns. Don’t believe me then check the outage map your self from Western Mass Electric Company. Since it’s too late to get prepared for it I wand to try to share a few tips to help you get through it and the rest of the week safely.

1. The gas pump. There is a lot of stress involved in trying to get gas this week so try to be creative about it. First off, don’t drive if you don’t have to - carpooling is a great way to conserve. Gas typically gets delivered at a gas stations slower times and often late night. So do your best and wait until late night, when most are off the road to go out for gas. If you can’t avoid the mid-day stop then just make sure you do your best to stay safe, don’t block, traffic and be compassionate. Everyone else is in the same boat....Or just come find me later tonight gassing up with out too much of a headache after the gas deliveries happen.

2. Be supportive! If you are one of the lucky ones that have power and heat make sure you check in with those around you - especially any elderly neighbors! Personally I’ve opened up my own shower to friends and family to help make the days a little easier. No one likes to think of themselves as a burden so to help keep people and interpersonal relationships healthy make sure you offer whenever possible if you can. The same goes for clearing brush and debris - as long as there is no danger of electrocution that is. Times like this can be extremely inconvenient but can also be an opportunity to bring communities together.

3. It’s not the Apocalypse. Try to avoid over spending on worst-case-scenario type products. Emotions are running high this week and people tend to get panicky. When you are at the grocery stores (that are open and taking electronic payments) try not to be the people buying up all the milk and eggs - the storm has already passed. Treat it as any other grocery store visit. Go with a list and a plan, even if it means you are taking more creative avenues for food prep. The same goes for hardware stores. If you need repair materials make sure you are organized - it’s so easy to end up with way more than you need when you get to the check out.

4. Lastly keep a phone book on hand. I know it’s archaic but when the Internet is down being able to flip through the phone book can prove to be a big help. If your someone who is against them still even in a time like this then they can make really good fodder to start a fire. It’s a win-win.

I know that this wasn’t a list of things to do or to buy to prep for a storm like the one that just hit Western Mass but that was not the idea. There are a lot of people out an about because they have no heat or electricity so be sure to think of that before the road rage kicks in. Please try to stay as rational as possible with buying decisions. Just because the utilities are out doesn’t mean you can throw out the budgets and savings plans you were working on.
