iPhone 4S and Shopping for "Me"

Are you going to do any “me” buying this holiday season? For me this is a very real dilemma. I try to be very on top of where my discretionary income is going - but it’s been a long summer full of frugality, stay-cations, and work. The iPhone 4S announcement is what sparked these thoughts for me. Barring how you feel about the latest iPhone iteration or your thoughts on Apples leadership to date, there is still a lot of bright and shiny coming up this season. I have a few tips to help you get the utility and feelings of consumption you are craving without actually having to break the bank.
1. Black Friday: This is probably one of my favorite non-commissioned or non-Hallmark holidays. It’s great for a few reasons: shopping for gifts and shopping for me. Black Friday and the weekend shopping around it allows us to spread our budgeted spending dollars farther. If you are into gadgets and apparel then this is when you should be making your bigger purchases. Everything from Laptops to Sports Coats are discounted to get rid of older (still very usable) and seasonal inventory to make room for next years models and fashions.
2. Second Hand: Black Friday is once a year and during the releases of all the new gadgets, cell phones, and clothing lines people will be looking to off-load their gently used stuff to make room for their next purchases. Sometimes even cell carriers will carry older models at discounts like what Apple plans to do with the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S. I hate to pick on Apple but the same thing happens with their tablets. To be fair Google is hosting a Nexus Prime event next week and will talk all about Ice Cream Sandwich and their next lines of phones. Craigslist and eBay are our friends.
3. Consumption Scale. Sometimes it’s not the size of a purchase that makes us feel whole but the fact that we are walking away with something for us. So when you are out navigating the malls, flea markets, e-commerce sites be sure to add a little something on top for you. Not to sound like your parents but moderation is key. The same type of reward behavior is something I cover with all my sales consulting clients. Whether you won that day or lost make sure you are rewarding yourself for just working. The same with gift shopping. Window shopping will only carry you so far so to keep yourself motivated, on budget, and sane make sure you are treating yourself along the way.
4. Research! No shot-gun-instant-regret purchases. No shopping roulette. Be effective and efficient when you are spending. Being random might only land you feeling regretful and having to take one more trip to try to return what ever that impulse was. If you are looking for something that’s a bigger ticket item, that you weren’t already budgeting for, then make sure you do your homework. Even if you decide not to reward yourself a little bit at a time and decide to make a larger buy like the newest Apple gadget, Kindle Fire, or 55’ TV - research, research, research! The more time you spend analyzing a larger purchase the more reward you’ll feel at execution. When you give yourself some time to sit on a decision you are also qualifying it to make sure it’s what you really want.
