It might be because of stress or pride but regardless it plugs up our lines of communication. Whether it's project management, dealing with your clients/customers, or your home life being an effective communicator can safe time and money. Great communication is hard to come by. It can be our own self interest or our view of the "right" thing to do that can get in the way. Groups and crowdsourcing is a great resource and can prove to be your strongest asset. It takes navigating the murkiness of interpersonal relations to get there.
It's easy to focus on the results. It's easy to point out everyone else's inadequecies but it takes a real manager and leader to understand why things don't always work out like we hoped. This post is going to be the Top 10 most important aspects of communicating effectivley.
1. Objectives. Making sure everyone that is even remotely associated with a project understands the desired results and through-puts of a project. You should have them documented.
2. Clear profiles. Everyone has a job and its easy for people to get confused in what their expectations are. It's important to create clear roles for everyone so that they can be monitored and be working as effeciently as possible.
3. Meetings. The fewer the better. If objectives are understood and roles are clear meetings should just be connecting points between phases of any plan. Stop having them just to be busy!
4. Benchmarks. No one should be going from start of the project to finish with out any kind of feed back or collaboration. If a team is working on something it should be the team that keeps each individual honest and connected to the mission. Benchmarks allow for those periodic check ins.
5. Active listening. Not just acting engaged but being engaged. If you are working on something odds are you have a few ideas that you would like to have heard. So it's important to grant everyone working on the project the same courtesy. There maybe lots of levels of experience so it's important to listen because that diversity can only strengthen the process.
6. Damage control. Nothing is perfect. No plan is without flaws. Being able to adapt to situations and utilize resources is paramount. Sometimes not everyone handles change well so it's also important to be able to convey why things are moving in different directions.
7. Micro managing. Don't do it. Trust yourself, those that are working with you, and the outline of everything else before to help keep people honest and on track.
8. Pride. Be sensitive to it. Try to keep your own in check. Make sure that any actions always fall on the the goal of the objectives and the mission. Sometimes our pride makes us narrow-minded especially because we don't wear our resumes on our shirts for everyone to see how accomplished we are. Your job is to help manage your own, each others and the entire groups.
9. Language. Choosing the actual words you use is imporatant. Are you using positive language or are you being sarcastic and condescending. Highly stressed groups might also be highly sensitive especially when motives are questioned.
10. Play nice. Do your best to be a support for your group. Not every group will be highly performing or communicate well. Now that we are at the end of this list it's up to you to keep everyone's efforts cohesive.
Communication is how things get done, it's how we express ourselves, and it's grow. When something happens to plug up our communication lines not only can it hurt us but it can hurt the project. So in a non-academic type way you see how important communicating is in managing and leading. It's not all about head nods and rephrasing questions.
