Black Friday Safety Tips

Today’s blog post is not going be too much about business and spending but more about sociology. This post if going to give you a peak into one of my biggest hobbies - people watching. What I mean by that is reading body language, interpersonal relations, and being able to guess what motivates people to act (or hopefully seeing tells that will keep you safe). Black Friday is all about being well planned out and efficient. No matter how well you plan though it is tough to get an idea of what the environment is going to look like that morning. Whenever you have that many people in one place all clamoring for the same very short supplied super deals it has the potential to be a powder keg. Here are 4 Tips to help keep you safe in line and navigating the overcrowded aisles.

1. Watching faces. You don’t need to have read Dr. Ekman’s manuals (they are good reads though) to get an idea of what people are thinking. Take a look at the line or the crowds you are in. Are people smiling or jovial? Are their brows furrowed and faces solemn? A quick an easy way to take an assessment of how a crowd is doing is to watch faces. Watch them change because people will emote together and for your own planning it’s good to know what you are up against.

2. Arms. What are peoples arms doing? Are the engaging in conversation and using them as ways to accent their stories? Are they crossed across their chest - closing themselves off to their peers and their crowds. Are their hands on their hips with their shoulders back - standing confident and strong. Most people aren’t consciously deciding what to do with their arms so it’s important to take note of their positions. People will mirror the crowd as a way to maintain their earned spots in the line.

3. Having a plan is important so try not to get distracted by crowds. When you are making your way through the stores try not to get distracted by crowds gathering. We have innate urges to make our way to where more people are thinking that we might be able to derive some benefits. Odds are they are just being sucked in by gimmicks and impulses and that will take time away from what you are actually looking for. It’s all part of our condition as social animals. Stay sharp!

4. Watch for movement patterns. Are people moving from item to item casually and calmly or are they moving quickly and aggressively. By watching how people move not only might you be able to plan your shopping around them but you will definitely keep yourself safe. Those that are more aggressive as they are making their way through the store will probably be some of the first to fight over stuff. I personally don’t like to shop in a war zone so I tend to avoid those packs of people. At the same time you can use this information to your advantage by possibly being aggressive while others around seem passive - not recommending this at all, just food for thought!

So for today and the rest of the shopping season be safe out there. Start watching people because it gets to be fun after a while. Then start applying to outsmart those impulse or just viking-style-pillage-way-through-store types.

I think the best time of year is black friday and cyber monday to celebrate the first Thanksgiving. And to buy gifts for those we love. The family is together. However, the product must be selected. The best price and free shipping.
