Review of "I Will Teach You To Be Rich"

I've been hovering in and around the financial blogosphere for about 7 years now. I dabbled in the early days but it wasn't until a few years ago that I actually had the time and the resources to find my voice - and a home here at Financially Digital. I know the last few weeks I haven't been the most consistant with blog posts but it's for good reason I promise.

I felt the urge to give a review today and I wanted to review one of the first financial bloggers I started to really follow years ago. His name is Ramit Sethi and he runs Iwillteachyoutoberich.com. (This was written before the Forbes 6 page interview about Ramit that can be found here.) I've seen this website, blogger, and personal finance advocate seriously kill it over the years. Yes, "advocate" not guru - I hate the guru label.

Ramit takes a few different approaches in helping people do better for themselves - changing personal finance behavior and earning more. His messages skip all the platitudes and common affirmations that go along with being a better saver. He goes past will power and budgeting but tries to help would-be savers change their behaviors and attitudes. This is something I am a HUGE fan of because it is how I run my consulting practice - not by giving people tools but changing behavior.

If you were to sit in on one of my last Macroeconomic classes you would remember that we covered economic productivity and the different forms of capital that fuel it. Ramit helps people really earn more by accessing their personal capital beyond what they do for work. Through his posts and an e-course he offers he helps people figure where to find time and the capacity to offer products and services to people to earn extra money. While I haven't actually taken the course I have seen some of the materials he uses. Just like the savings concepts Ramit sticks to real actions, scripts, templates, and systems that have been tested and that yield real results.

The website is pretty easy to use as well. Labels are clear, the site is consistently branded and it's very user friendly. Ramit and his team do a great job of giving the readerships opportunities to interact. Visitors can comment and share their successes and their challenges with Ramit's systems. One of best things about the site is that Ramit's voice hasn't changed at all. His approach is direct, sarcastic, and real. You can see it all over his blog posts and content and it's the kind of communicating that slaps you in the face but in as gently directing a way as possible.

I have had nothing but positive experiences when I've engaged with this site. If you are looking for benchmark-able ways to do better for yourself then this is a great spot. If you are feeling a little insecure about your situation and are looking for some self-affirmation..this is not the place for you.

I encourage you to take a look not just here but all over the place for great information. Whether you are here or at Ramit's the idea is that you find goodies that you can take with you to better your situations. No one has all the answers - even though I like to think that I have a good amount of them :)
