Creative Ways to Save Money During the Holidays

This time of the year the internet is chock-full-o-personal-finance posts and articles about saving money. My hope is to bring a little creative insight to trying to save a few bucks this holiday season.

Get green if you haven't started already. This time of year there is a lot of focus on making extra room for spending. Gifts, trips, cookies, and bottles of wine and holiday parties all mean more spending. It's a great time to start to get efficient in the house. You might not be able to control all the social obligations but you might be able curb your energy consumption. Great time of year for energy saving lights, insulation of doors and windows, and even up-cycling.

Bartering for gifts. This time of year people that are crafters have their personal hobby factories tuned up to high. If you aren't a crafter then find out how you can work with someone who is to get a few handmade gifts to give away this year. With all of our schedules pretty tight those that are crafting probably have even less time. So find out what you can offer that would bring some real value to them - maybe even saving the crafters some money.

Never paying full price has a few great points under its heading. Don't stop crawling for web deals. Just because Cyber Monday is over doesn't mean that retailers won't have special deals for their online shoppers. Amazon should be one of your most visited bookmarks if it isn't already. Another creative way to not pay full price is to figure out your purchases in advance and to try to pick up similar products at discount places. This time of year is great for consignment because people are cleaning out their basements and closets to make room for the next round of stuff. Consignment isn't a bad term - in fact it's a really smart term. It takes a little patience and a lot of planning but it's a great way to stash a few extra dollars away.

BONUS GAME: This is what I play to save. No one should ever store their savings in their mattress or a shoe box. To give my savings an edge every time I walk by a certain spot in the house I take $20 (you can use $1, $5, $10, even the loose change in your pockets) and put it in a secret physical place. It's out of sight so I don't think about it but a visual queue I hung keeps me honest. Again I don't advertise that you keep all your savings in a physical place but something like this will help to add something extra to your budgets bottom line. Plus I love to count it at the end of the month :)
