Doing What You Love: Money Doesn't Equal Happiness

Today is a very special treat! We have a great guest post offering some perspective on doing what you love vs. just earning a paycheck. I've been doing a ton of reflection and reading lately and it's definitely opened my eyes to the importance of this post. Enjoy!

The "real world" is hard. We'd been told this our whole lives and at times maybe even doubted it. But, more than likely I think we each realized, even as nave teenagers, that adulthood was going to be difficult. Full of responsibility and important decisions, the "real world" at times is as cliche as it sounded when we were young. We worry about money. We worry about career growth. We worry about everything. All too often, however, we overlook what it is that makes us happy. We stay in jobs that we hate because we think it's the only way to make the money we need. This is unnecessary and detrimental, not only to our spirits, but also, to our bank accounts.

Now, don't get me wrong, you are likely going to have to take jobs that you dislike at some point in your life. We've all done it. There are certain sacrifices that have to be made in order to make the money we need to survive. Making a career is very much about stepping blocks. You have to take positions that will help you grow and will lead you to the position you truly desire. It can be harmful (not surprisingly) to put all of your effort towards something that you are not truly interested in or passionate about.

The stress accompanied with going to work every day disliking what you do can have serious consequences on many aspects of your life. One of the most significant is the injury it causes to our personal lives. With the pressures of bills, mortgages, and car payments, we often lose sight of the reason we work to begin with. In general, we work so that we can earn the money we need to be happy outside of the professional world. If we are unhappy most of the day at work, it can be impossible (as we've all experienced) to put aside that anger when we get home. This puts undue stress on our personal relationships. Furthermore, regular stress can pose serious health risks to any individual.

Now, I know what you are thinking, sure stress is bad, but money is money. People often fail to realize that disliking their job can also hinder their earnings. Individuals who enjoy what they do are more likely to perform at a higher level. This is not to say that people who dislike their jobs perform poorly. More so, if an individual enjoys what they are doing they are more motivated to strive for excellence. Individuals who are less passionate about their work perform the necessary tasks throughout the day without pushing beyond an average performance. In this way, not doing what you love stifles your earning potential because you will not try to achieve as much. Being excited and passionate about your work is the best way to get a promotion or pay increase.

When it comes down to it, having a career that you love will benefit all aspects of your life. There are going to be several challenges you must endure on your way to this career, but it is possible. Moreover, it is important. So, money really can't bring happiness. If you're not happy making your money, then you're not going to be happy either way.
