Business Coach vs. Local Government

Local government is quite the show (not a rock show type but more like guitar lessons) - specifically a city council or whatever decision making committee your community has. Full of fury, emotion, passion, and veils of smoke. While there are amazing City Councilors in Springfield like Amaad Rivera who really care about creating communities, collaboration, and continuing communication within communities to really empower them.

Let me first start by saying I love me some good old fashion community run government. There are millions of individuals all over our amazing country working very hard to further the interest of the communities they represent. My gripe is the hodge-podge of financial interests and poor abilities to plan. As an advocate for financial literacy I'm inclined to think that local politicians should get a crash course in financial planning - or at least in acting like the financial fiduciaries they are.

I had the opportunity to sit in on a meeting recently as I am a big believer in taking action when you are looking for positive changes. I was floored by the inefficiencies and the arguments between politicians on even a local level. Now for those reading that might be local I’m not taking shots at any one in particular but just some observations from the wooden seats. What I saw were rushed responses, tabled issues, and a few personal swipes. What I saw were emotional arguments and not enough collaboration. Oh..and throwing money at problems is NOT always the answer, it's not an endless vat of revolving credit.

How a small business coach might help a deciding body like a City Council. Five coaching/consulting exercises to think about before your next meeting.

1. Reconnect with what your office is and the goals for the community as a whole - not just your ward/area. Imagine your voters are more like your stakeholders - how are you running your company?!

2. What’s your brand? Politics is just like selling any other kind of product or service. How are you selling yourself or showing your consumers that you are continually adding value - start small: Facebook, Twitter, a NON-STATIC website.

3. Have a business plan. From the start of your campaign to the end of your tenure you should have a business plan. Like any plan you should revise it but keeping it a live and referenced helps to keep a busy schedule in check. What gets measured gets managed!

4. Get involved in your community. Just like businesses looking to connect in a community - for referrals or to expand a professional network. It’s so important that your stakeholders get to know you as an individual and not just some on looker from an Ivory Tower. Developing connections and cultivating relationships should be the foundation of any small business.

5. Evaluate your current systems. It’s important to have an eye on cash flows inside your business and for politicians outside of your immediate spheres of influence as well. Transperancy also helps when you are talking about the “books” as well. Even when it looks like there’s no money - you’d be surprised how much leverage you will have with just having a real picture about how cash is flowing in and out of your business. It helps you find new efficiencies!
