Breaking News: Steve Jobs steps down as Apple CEO

I do not consider myself an insider by any means. If I have to call myself anything it would be more of an tech enthusiast - a kinder and gentler tech pundit. I couldn't resist throwing my two cents in on this one. In an economy where the Google's and the Apple's are some of the few firms that are continuing to expand, employ, and invest it's tough to watch leadership change hands. It's no surprise that something like this would be on the horizon though - Steve Jobs has had some health issues in the past, stepped away and then back. Now I don't want to take this space to detail Apple's industrious last 10 years but I do think that every one should see what is being advertised as his resignation letter. "The following is the resignation letter from Steve Jobs to the Apple board:

CUPERTINO, Calif.–August 24, 2011–To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know.

Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

At this point it's pretty clear who the next CEO is and I can't say that I'm surprised. It's too early to tell yet whether Mr. Cook will be the same kind of iconic leader that Steve Jobs was - even just his ability to move crowds in a black mock neck t-shirt. From a business stand point - aside from the back of house role of the CEO financial markets will most definitley have all eyes on Tim Cook to see his first official actions. CEO's have a responibility to be as much a celebrity role model as well as a driving force. It's important that he and the rest of the board really solidify the future and values Apple will continue to exude so that the confidence of the stakeholders (including all you stockholders out there) does not shutter.

I can't wait to see how this plays out!
