Keeping your eyes on why you really started this business can help mitigate some of the pressure. When you work with a great group getting support will be huge for you. You can’t diversify it all the way though so be sure to be prepared for being stressed out.

2. Money. Even the leanest and meanest start ups will need money to grow at some point. We all need supplies, inventory, and eventually to pay wages (our own). While being lean and mean will get you going and even to some level of success be prepared to spend. One of the biggest hurdles small businesses run into is budgeting too lean. There will always be things that need your financial attention so be prepared to spend. There’s not telling what’s behind old drywall, what adapters you need for your hardware, or when you need to rush order marketing materials. Be realistic and do your homework! A reference to the first point - most stress will probably be financial in nature.

3. Speed (or lack there of). Building a business takes time. Very rarely are business at full capacity out of the gate. Even Internet businesses take time to gain traffic and traction. So be careful with your expectations. A slow start doesn’t mean that you are a failure. It takes time for businesses to find efficiencies and a rhythm, especially if it’s your first go at it. The Internet is full get-rich-quick types of advice for businesses but be sure to understand that results will and do vary. Spend more time focusing on how your particular brand brings value for the prices your asking for it. Spend time on branching out into different markets or new marketing plans. Please don’t spend too much time just surfing the web looking for a quick fix.

4. Working with people. Communication is so important in effectively managing employees or even just the people helping you get off the ground. You have to be sure information flows openly and freely. It’s so easy for resentment to settle in and create a very non-productive environment. Along the same lines are the constant suggestions from everyone else that “knows better”. Be rehearsed. Do your due diligence. Smile often. Make honesty a priority. Those are a few of the best ways to navigate the growing socio-complexities of running a business.

I hope I didn’t scare you away because there’s so much potential out in the economy these days. It’s important to capitalize on opportunities and create how and where you work - not just react to it. If the first project doesn’t succeed then shake it off and try again. If you can beat out all the stress, negativity, money problems, and manage people effectively you might have a shot at real winner.
