There's a simple formula to boosting your savings account: put in more money than you take out. While that may look good on paper, saving is often easier said than done.

To maximize your savings, forget the long-term goals. Planning to put back money for retirement is a huge deal, but it's not very motivating when you've still got thirty years left in the workforce.

Break down your goals into motivational challenges. Figure up how much you need to save for that long-term goal and break it down by year or even by month.

Having a tangible, reachable goal each month can help you get excited about putting back money. It also helps you stay on track. If you fail to meet one month's goal, work a little harder the next month to catch up.

Consider high-yield savings accounts. Your current savings account may be fine for emergency or overdraft protection purposes, but you won't be earning much interest.

Find a credit union or internet-based bank that offers no-fee high-yield savings that will grow your money faster than average. You may also consider a cash ISA.

A cash ISA (individual savings account) comes with special tax advantages that don't require you to pay income tax on the interest earned from the account. While there are limits on how much you can earn with a cash ISA, it's a no-brain way to invest.

A CD (certificate of deposit) is another easy way to invest savings for a higher rate of return. Offered by banks and credit unions, CDs are basically savings accounts with a fixed term. You cannot withdraw the funds from a CD during the designated term, so this "out of sight, out of mind" approach may help you boost your savings.

No matter which type of account you choose, pay yourself first. Determine a feasible percentage or amount of money you want to put in savings with each paycheck and do it on payday. Set up an automatic savings deposit if your employer or bank offers such a service.

Cut down on spending and bad habits to siphon leftover money into savings. Be sure to treat yourself, but keep track of the amounts you save when you clip coupons, shop at thrift stores, or take advantage of sales.

Keep track of these extra savings and see how much your discipline paid off at the end of the month. Whether you saved $5 or $100 from spending cuts, transfer the money to savings.

Start saving now. Most people put off saving for one reason or another. They feel like they can't afford it or that they will end up withdrawing the money anyway when times inevitably get tough.

Throw out that attitude and start contributing now. Compounded interest is a powerful tool in boosting your savings without any additional effort on your part.

Don't wait for another two or three years to get serious because that's years you could have been earning interest. Put back what you can now and focus on more aggressive savings later if need be.

Get in the habit of saving. Once you do, it will come naturally. Research shows that it takes 21 days to adjust to major changes, but after that, your mind takes over and a new habit is made.

Discipline yourself now and set aside money on a regular basis. Once you've made a few regular deposits, saving will become second nature to you.
